Charge framing hearing against Koko adjourned

A Dhaka court on Sunday adjourned the hearing on charge framing against Arafat Rahman Koko, youngest son of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, till April 7 in connection with a tax evasion case.

Judge Mohammad Zohurul Haque of the Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order after Koko’s lawyer submitted a petition seeking an adjournment of the hearing.

In the petition, the lawyer said they had earlier filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging the legality of the case.

The HC after the hearing issued a rule upon the government to explain why the trial proceedings of the case should not be declared illegal. But the hearing on the rule is now remained pending.

So, he prayed for an adjournment of the hearing, the lawyers said.

The same court on February 27 asked the lawyer to submit by March 20 the HC order if it gives in the tax evasion case.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on March 1 last year filed the case against Koko for evading income tax for fiscal years from 2002-2003 to 2006-2007.

Khaleda leaves for S Arabia

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia left for Saudi Arabia last night on a 10-day visit during which she will have medical treatment and perform Umrah.

Before she left, she directed the party's Senior Joint Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, through her personal aide Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, to carry out the responsibilities of secretary general. The post has fallen vacant due to the death of Khandaker Delwar Hossain.

“Madam [Khaleda] asked me to continue party activities as secretary general,” Alamgir, also a former state minister, told The Daily Star last night.

Asked whether he will be the acting secretary general of the party, the BNP leader said there is no provision for acting secretary general in the party constitution.

Her younger brother Shamim Iskander, his wife Kaniz Fatema and personal staffs are accompanying her.

Public interest motions in JS

It is discomforting news that notices relating to matters of public interest are mostly rejected in the Jatiyo Sangsad. In the last two years more than four thousand motions have been rejected by the House. Even matters of serious issues like citizens' security, renovation of Dhaka-Chittagong highway and law and order situation etc., were not taken up.

Action against Gaddafi

Libya is under armed attack from the United States, United Kingdom and France. The action against Tripoli, mandated by a UN Security Council resolution, with significant abstentions has been taken to prevent the autocratic regime of Muammar Gaddafi from attacking and killing his own people, who have in these past few weeks made it clear that they want him out of power. For his part, Gaddafi has not helped matters any by vowing to show no mercy to those who have risen against him. His chilling warning that his forces will conduct house to house and room to room searches to locate his opponents has only demonstrated the desperate straits his people are in.

What is Editorial news ?

An editorial is an opinion piece written by the senior editorial staff or publisher of a newspaper or magazine. Editorials are usually unsigned and may be supposed to reflect the opinion of the periodical. In the UK, these unsigned columns are known as "leading articles". In major United States newspapers, such as the New York Times and the Boston Globe, editorials are classified under the heading "opinion".

Typically, a newspaper's editorial board evaluates which issues are important for their readership to know the newspaper's opinion.
